The Quest of a Non-foodie
So the idea for this post came to me from one of the respondents in my What’s Your Passion post. She said she was a foodie and when I asked her a question about what would be her last meal, she listed a meal for morning, noon, and night.
So my question to you, dear reader, is this: If you were on death row, what would be your final meal?
Now think about this question, and think even harder on your answer. I believe the answer to this question will place the label of ‘Foodie’ or ‘Non-foodie’ upon you. Not from me, mind you, but from other respondents. I would guess that if you would potentially list Kobe Steak with your grandmothers mashed potatoes and homemade green beans, you may be labeled as a foodie. If, like me, you simply would enjoy a good old Pepperoni Tombstone Pizza, you may find yourself labelled as a non-foodie.
So now that you’ve answered that question and maybe have seen other comments, what(if you’re a foodie) is your opinion of those who are not. And what(if you’re a non-foodie) is your opinion of those who are?
My answer as a non-foodie who observed the aforementioned foodie’s comment is this: That she must have a great deal of experience with various foods and that, even if I’m not interested in what she listed, she has my respect.
So now it’s up to all of you. Foodies and Non-Foodies alike, what do you think?

Last meal: Roast beef, mashed potatos with gravy. I have no opinion on the foodie non foodie thing.
Chicken saag and fried chicken with mashed potatoes. I really like chicken.
I love this post because I love to eat! lol. Its so funny because I consider myself a foodie and living in my city, its so easy to experience cuisines from so many cultures and I take full advantage of this, yet I have actually asked myself the ‘what would be my last meal on earth question’ and to date, I’ve only been able to think of one meal: A bacon cheeseburger and order of fries most likely from the chain FIVE GUYS. I know..it is a totally unfoodie answer! It even surprised me.
@Crying_In_Color - Now all of a sudden I want to go to Arby’s and get me some roast beef sandwiches lol.
@BoulderChristina - I love Italian Chicken. Fried chicken is good, but chicken breasts covered with Italian dressing is to die for(see what I did there?)
@Cassie@datingish - I’ve never heard of Five Guys. Is that exclusive to the northeast? Thanks for the Rec!
my goodness… If it were really my LAST meal, I’d probably have LOTS of stuff.
I’d probably want some super wonderful and rich desserts, like something from Cheesecake Factory (who’s counting calories at that point, right?) and some kind of extremely rich pasta thing. hahaha.
I dunno. I never actually eat like that IRL (unless it’s like my birthday or sometihng)
@Shadowrunner81 - No prob! I guess five guys may be more prominent in the NE…they actually started becoming really popular near me only in the last couple of years. I am also a fan of Smashburger…have you heard of that chain?
I see what you did there! I definitely think I am a foodie. I wish I weren’t though! hehe
You were born 2 1/2 weeks after me.
@BoulderChristina - @LKJSlain - Yeah if it’s the LAST meal, I say let all hell break loose. Maybe I should eat two pizzas. haha. Thanks for the rec.
@Cassie@datingish - I googled ‘Five guys’ and they are in Ohio so I might check them out sometime. Maybe have myself a bacon cheeseburger.
. Never heard of Smashburger though. ::runs off to google it as well::
@BoulderChristina - Nothing wrong with being a foodie. I suppose unless you’re trying to watch the cholesterol or something. BUT, like Marie said on Everybody Loves Raymond; “What’s the point of living longer if you’re miserable?”
@NightCometh - I’ve been going through a mini mid-life crisis ever since turning 30. How bout you?
@Shadowrunner81 - I call those early life crisis…youre still too young to be considered mid life.
@Shadowrunner81 - I was suicidal on my birthday. I’m doing better now. I felt my life was over because I’ve waited so long to get married…saved myself for my husband…all for naught.
Have you ever seen that Dominoes Pizza commercial, where there’s the cookbook for the guys who like to cook vs. the guys who really couldn’t care less? Definition of a foodie vs. a non-foodie. Still, we all gotta eat and food is food!
I’m happy you followed-up on this one! I like to see everybody’s responses, and you may be on to something there with a good ol’ PT pizza as a last meal.. mmm..
@Cassie@datingish - With the lifespan of my father’s side of the family…30 may very well be mid-life, but thanks for the encouragement anyway.
@NightCometh - I’m definitely glad you’re doing better now. What do you mean by “all for naught”? 30 is for a lot of people just the beginning. Most people don’t even know what they want to do with their life until they’re in their late 20′s or early 30′s.
@specialxplaces - I can’t recall seeing that commercial, but maybe I’ll try and find it on youtube. And yeah, pepperoni pizza for me. I’m not that complex of a guy when it comes to food. Ha ha. Thanks for the rec!
My last meal would be sauteed pork medallions with a demi glace, roasted reds and sprouts. It was one of the best meals I ever tasted in culinary school and one I shall never forget.
@bluemoonsundaes - Ding, ding, ding. I think we have ourselves a foodie! I have a friend in New Hampshire who was going to go to Culinary School until she got a decent job and left that dream behind. Does that mean you are a professional chef?
@Shadowrunner81 - Yes I am. Went to culinary school and owned/operated my own catering/private chef firm for about six years. Recently I closed it down to go back to writing, but I still cook and love food.
@bluemoonsundaes - Awesome, and I said it on your blog but I’ll say it here again….congrats on the baby girl.
I’m an odd bird. I love to cook, but I could care less about eating. Weird, huh?
I’ve heard that some people have extra-sensitive taste buds (some refer to themselves, and others who have them, as “super-tasters”) and that could partially explain why some people are foodies and some are not. Super tasters tend to taste things more extremely and can sometimes taste quite an array of different ingredients contained in something they’re eating.
I, on the other hand, have suffered from such frequent sinus infections that I think my sense of smell – and thus, my sense of taste – has been forever damaged. There was once a dead mouse behind our stove for about 2 weeks and I never smelled it at all, even when my friends were gagging and horking every time they went near it. I didn’t even smell it when the stove was pulled out and the rodent removed and the area sanitized. I only vaguely smelled the ammonia.
So…my last meal? Surprise me. I may or may not even eat it. I tend to quit eating when I’m stressed, and being on death row with one meal left would definitely be stressful!
