Just letting you know
I will no longer be publishing any information about the novel I’m writing. This means that the four of you Xangans who have read the first two ‘chapters’ will no longer get any more of them. This is not a reaction to any that has happened, it’s just me being protective of my intellectual property. No one except my family was all that invested in the novel anyway(it was just the prologue and chapter 1 afterall) so this is just a minor announcement to you. To me though, it’s kind of a major announcement.
You see, I had planned to release each chapter on its’ own upon completion to those who were on the mailing list, and perhaps via word of mouth I would eventually get ‘noticed’. This is how it worked on a music site(ctgmusic.com) for a lot of people. They would post their work for all to see, and they would gain a small group of fans, and perhaps one of those fans would have connections to a major label and then BAM, their work would show up on an album. This was my intent here on Xanga. Release a sample of what was in each chapter and gain s small following, and in turn follow other bloggers/writers, and perhaps get noticed one day down the road and BAM get published.
I’ve decided the risk is too great that someone out there will see an idea or two from what I’m doing and…remix…it into their own work and take credit for it. I would have no grounds to sue as it would have been my own fault for divulging so much information about what I was doing. So there you go. Call it a preemptive strike or what have you.
So my guess is that you thoughts are something along these lines:
1. Most Likely – “That’s nice and all but I don’t really care about his crappy novel”
2. Somewhat Likely – “That’s nice and all but I hope he gets his novel published one day”
3. Perhaps Just – “That’s nice and good luck to him”
So my only question for this evening is this: Have you ever worked on a novel, short story, poem, sonnet, or song lyrics and had your intellectual property stolen? If so, how did you recover from that experience? If not(like me) I hope you never go through that. I don’t use the word ‘Hate’ much, but one thing I would Hate is to see someone take one of my songs I created back in 2005, Remix it without my consent, then have that remixed version be consider better than the original. That would really, really piss me off.
Have a wonderful evening!
Dan

that could probably be a good idea.
Agreed, good idea. I really never cared if my poetry was stolen or not. I just wrote it because I enjoyed it. I have disk and back ups with proof dates in case anybody ever trys to steel it off my facebook and publish it. Good luck with the novel.
I’d probably do the same! Can’t risk that. What will your novel be about?
@Zissu25 - Thanks for reading what little you saw.
@Crying_In_Color - I’m using a second Xanga site as a backup for everything. And I email it my immediate family and to my other email account. Then there are two flashdrives(one on my keychain). Do I sound Paranoid or what? lol
@weirdgirl017 - It’s a fantasy novel based on an old nintendo game called Final Fantasy. It has about 12 sequels now, but I’m talking about the very first one. It holds a lot of memories for me about my childhood and as I get older I want to have a way to remember the game without necessarily having to play it. So….I’m writing a novel about it. So far I’m very happy with it, but I’m sure there will be days where I just don’t feel like writing and will, or just don’t feel like researching it and will. This post was just a step to make sure nobody took some of the philosophical and religious ideas I’m infusing into it and putting them into their own work. Was this response more than you asked for? lol.
@Shadowrunner81 - Nope, it is just right!
Very cool idea…
Jeeses and I just found out
About ten years ago, in my early teens, I wrote lots of short stories that I wish I still had now. They weren’t stolen from me, just deleted. It’s not quite the same as theft, but I do feel a loss for my previous inspirations. I think what you did was a good choice in order to protect your work.
@asrial86 - Yeah it’s not that I don’t trust the people I’m getting to know here. It’s just that with so many other ‘young writers’ that it would be easy for someone to see one of my philosophical ideas and say ‘Hmmm I wonder if I could turn that into something of my own’ and there you go. It’s the Remix thing I was talking about.
@Shadowrunner81 - Definitely, and it’s so easy to be “inspired” by someone’s work, but then for that person to take it and do something more with it. I’d hate for the original work to be muted or eclipsed for the stems into the new.
I worry about this with my writing too. Good luck on the book!
@a_place2freely_scream - Thanks. I’ll post pulses about it from time to time. Welcome to the site.
I’ve never had that happen, and I hope you don’t either! Good to take precautions. Good luck with your writing.
yes, I’ve written poems that have been stolen. Due to the fact that I’m banned as a person–because I’m a communist-terrorist, it’s impossible for a major place to notice me. I have to stick to the small guys.
@Colorsofthenight - Consider me one of the small guys. I think you have real talent as a writer. Dawn of the Hives was inspired to say the least.
I’m usually politely rejected because I don’t have any credit yet. Eventually, if I write enough stories, someone will put a paper or two in their works. The only thing I’ve ever had publsihed was poetry.
@Colorsofthenight - I’m extremely dense when it comes to poetry, but if you want to mail me a couple of your works I’d love to read them. Shadow81Dan@netscape.net
@Shadowrunner81 - I made Paris Hilton mad…. it’s a long story and a story in itself.
@Shadowrunner81 - I’ll dig some out and put them up on my xanga. I don’t care if they get stolen.
@Shadowrunner81 - poetry is difficult to write because of meter.
@Colorsofthenight - I don’t know if it’s any good, but here’s a poem I wrote: http://shadowrunner81.xanga.com/584205659/a-poem/
